Template

We have assumed a simplified template for the Academic Debuts series, so that each author is able to easily format their text. For that reason below we present only the most important principles of text formatting. In the event of specific doubts, please direct your questions to the AD editors (moreover, we also suggest to familiarize oneself with the already published texts).

Introduction [14pt font; line space 1]

[empty verse: 11pt, line space 1]
[empty verse: 11pt, line space 1]

The majority of chapters of this volume include my corrected and, changed or completed in several places, works referring to applied linguistics, in particular the history of its distinguishing, its conceptualization and theoretical funding. [11pt font, line space 1]

The description of the beginnings of the Polish research on matters included in the area of applied linguistics in its traditional perception and the most important achievements of the Polish linguists in this respect appear for the first time in the present volume in chapter 8. 1. Applied linguistics [14pt font, bold; line space 1]

[empty verse: 11pt, line space 1]
[empty verse: 11pt, line space 1]

The purpose of the present article is to contemplate the position of the so-called computer linguistics within the confines of other linguistic disciplines. It refers to, in particular, to research the matter in what sense computer linguistics is a section of applied linguistics, and to what extent it does not belong to it[1]. [11pt font, line space 1]

The domain of applied linguistics is simply constituted by application of linguistics in some area. Thus, there exist both theory and practice of application of linguistics in one or another area or, to put it differently, a consolidation of two domains, one being linguistics and the other – automatics, or didactics, neuropsychology, etc. It is an obvious matter that the other area has its features and its specificity (B. Baldini 1980:23).  [quotations: 1cm off the left, 1 cm off the right, top 6pt, bottom 6pt; 10pt font, line space 1]

1.1. Prehistory of applied linguistics [13pt font, bold, line space 1]

[empty verse: 11pt, line space 1]

For ages people dealt with different matters, included contemporarily in the field of applied linguistics, without realizing the fact that these matters belonged to its scope, that they constitute a certain category of questions. However, for a very long time, it happened so with all linguistics deliberations, for people started to engage in different matters now considered to be linguistic ones long before these were distinguished as a category (considered to be questions constituting a specific scope of their thinking), so, to put it differently: for ages they dealt with these (and still do so), without awareness that these belong to the area of linguistics.

1.1.1. Stratification of the world of applied linguistics [font: 11pt, bold; line space 1]

[empty verse: 11pt, line space 1]

Despite the fact that applied linguistics was distinguished relatively long ago, and despite those realizing this fact included some categories of ideas into its scope equally long ago, still a vast part of entities dealing with it is not aware they are dealing with linguistic matters.

M. Clyne in his research refers to the connotations which, in the aforementioned language areas, are related to appropriate manners of directing a scientific text:

M. Clyne claims that German scientists realize many additional goals by being digressive.

Particularly intense contemplation in this scope was undertaken in the beginning of the 70s of the 20th century in German linguistics. D. Möhn (1998a:157) righteously wrote that "in this period it was in good tone to extensively present the whole discussion about the differences between languages for special purposes and the general language in relevant publications".

However, the design of the first translation machine (from 1933) comes from P.P. Trojanskij (see I. Panov 1958: 66). Though, machine translation was undertaken intensely only after publishing the famous Translation memorandum by W. Weaver (see N. Locke/ A.D. Booth 1955).
